Background: Organization MAMA-86 is a network of 17 NGOs initiated by young mothers in 1990 to raise public awareness and to work with environment and health problems. In framework of WECF network MAMA-86 work in close co-operation with other NGOs from CEE and NIS countries. Access to safe and affordable

Drinking water and sanitation for Children is one of the main priority WECF network for today. Drinking water campaign in Ukraine was launched in 1997. It is a woman grass root initiative aimed to improve Ukrainian citizen's access to safe and affordable drinking water. Presently 11 local organizations participate in the campaign activities.

Ukraine is one of the former Soviet Republics with a population of 47,6 million, among which 32,1 million is urban population and 15,5 is rural population. According to the official statistics 29% of the population is poor people. Ukraine is a water limited country; with water resources of 0.67 to 1 thousand cubic meters of river run-off per capita per year. In Ukraine 65% of the population is provided by centralized water supply. 53% have sewage system. About 75% of the population is supplied from surface waters, which quality is insufficient for drinking purposes.

Analogical situation are in many other NIS and CEE countries. Pollution of water sources, bad access to safe and affordable Drinking water and sanitation in NIS and CEE countries, children diseases connected with polluted water and practical solution for resolving these problems –these main topics will be ddiscussed in framework of our site-event
